About Course

In this course, we will explore the fundamental aspects of examining the eye and the surrounding structures.

Examination of the Anterior Segment of the Eye and Its Adnexa

The examination of the anterior segment involves assessing the structures at the front of the eye, such as the cornea, iris, lens, and conjunctiva, as well as the surrounding tissues, known as the adnexa, which include the eyelids, lacrimal system, and surrounding muscles.

Examination of the Anterior Chamber/Angle

One crucial aspect of optometry is evaluating the anterior chamber and angle. This involves using various tools, such as a penlight, slit lamp, direct ophthalmoscope, and gonioscope. These tools allow optometrists to examine the structures within the anterior chamber, such as the aqueous humor, and assess the angle between the iris and cornea, which is crucial in conditions like glaucoma.

Post-Ocular Health Assessment (Binocular Vision)

Understanding binocular vision is essential in optometry. This assessment involves evaluating how both eyes work together to provide a single, unified image. Optometrists examine binocular vision both unaided and aided with the patient’s habitual correction, such as glasses or contact lenses. This assessment helps in diagnosing conditions like strabismus (eye misalignment) and amblyopia (lazy eye).

By mastering these foundational concepts of examining the anterior segment, assessing the anterior chamber/angle, and understanding binocular vision, you will be well on your way to becoming proficient in General Optometry.
